National Treasure Usuki Stone Buddha

The Usuki Sekibutsu (Cliff Buddha), represented by the Koen Sekibutsu Dainichi Nyorai statue, is said to have been carved between the late Heian period and the Kamakura period.
In 1995, it was designated as a National Treasure, the first Buddha sculpture on a cliff in Japan and the first sculpture in Kyushu.

Two Throne Historical Paths

Nioza, located at the knee of Usuki Castle, is a tuff hill formed by hardened volcanic ash from Mt. Aso, and roads were cut through the rocks here and there. The narrow alleys everywhere still retain the castle town's unique atmosphere, with high stone walls, massive tiled roofs, whitewashed buildings, and many temples stretching long along the sloping streets.
